Built for the images you actually use
A faster page often starts with a smaller image. But a useful compressor needs to preserve the details that matter: a clean logo edge, a smooth sky, readable text, or a natural skin tone. lighterpic puts file size and visual quality in the same workflow so you can decide what works for your image.
Local by design
Image decoding and compression happen on your device. You choose the files; the compressor works with those files in your browser.
Four useful formats
Work with AVIF, WebP, PNG and JPEG. Choose a format for the destination and the content, rather than using one setting for every image.
Free to use
No subscription or credit balance is required to use the compressor. Your device supplies the processing power.
A deliberate quality choice
Compare the result with your original. A smaller file is useful only when it is good enough for the job.
What “better compression” means
There is no single setting that is best for every image. A photograph, a product cutout and a screenshot have different needs. Quality controls, format choices and resizing can each reduce bytes, but they affect the result in different ways.
Modern image codecs can produce very small files, especially for photographs. They can also take longer to encode. A file that is already well optimized may shrink only a little, and re-encoding can sometimes make it larger. lighterpic does not promise a fixed percentage of savings or a result smaller than every other compressor.
The original still matters
Keep an original copy, especially for photographs, design masters and anything you may edit later. Treat a compressed image as a delivery version.
Why the browser?
Running the compressor locally avoids an image upload and makes your device part of the workflow. Encoding components can use WebAssembly to bring established image-processing code into the browser. Heavy image work can run in a worker so the interface stays responsive.
The tradeoff is practical: processing time and available memory depend on your device. A large batch of high-resolution photos takes more time and memory than a few small website assets. Closing other busy tabs or processing a smaller batch can help.
How the project is funded
lighterpic is currently free and has no active advertising. Advertising may support the site in the future. An advertising account, provider approval and the necessary privacy setup must be in place before ads are introduced. The privacy policy will be updated when the site's data practices change.
